INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS INFORMATION
To follow your chosen programme successfully, you will need to be fluent in written and spoken English. These are the qualifications in English regarded by Roehampton University as an acceptable minimum level of competence:
- GCSE grade C
- Cambridge Proficiency Certificate grade C
- Cambridge Advanced Certificate grade C (with no less than ‘weak’ in any band)
- Level 2 Functional Skills (English) with a pass grade (Not for Primary Education).
- Key Skills Level 2 in Communication with a pass grade (Not for Primary Education).
- LCCIEB, EFB or EFC with a second grade
- NEAB, UETESOL with a pass grade
- TEEP at 6.0 overall for Undergraduate programmes, 6.5 for Postgraduate courses

If you are taking a TOEFL exam and would like the information to be sent direct to Roehampton University please quote 8598 on your answer sheet and score report request form.
- British Council IELTS at 6.0 overall with no less that 5.5 in any band for Undergraduate programmes, 6.5 overall with no less than 5.5 in any band for Postgraduate programmes.
- A Pass in the online English equivalent test offered at www.equivalencytesting.com
- Warwick English Language Test
- Pearson Test of English with a score of at least 59 overall with no less than 59 in any band (undergraduate and postgraduate).
If you have not quite yet reached this standard, or feel that you would benefit from a course in English before you start your degree programme, you can take a preparation course at Roehampton. The Pre-Sessional English course is for students who just need to develop their English. The International Foundation Certificate and Premasters Certificate are for students who want to study subject content as well as English. See the next page for more details and entry requirements.
If you want to take one of the preparation courses just contact Admissions. You do not have tofill in another application form.
Pre-Sessional English
- An intensive course (26 hours per week of classes) for students who need to develop their English.
- Covers skills necessary for success on a degree course, such as the use of citation, writing longer essays and giving presentations.
- Courses are in the summer, finishing just before your degree starts in September
- If you reach the right standard on this course, you will not have to take IELTS or TOEFL again.

International Foundation and Premasters Certificates
- These courses help students whose first language is not English to develop the language skills, study skills and subject knowledge necessary for success on a degree programme in the UK.
- The IFC is suitable for students who require an additional year of study before beginning an undergraduate degree.
- The Premasters is suitable for students who need more subject knowledge before beginning a postgraduate programme.
- The Fast Track Programmes are for students with a higher level of English.
- There are pathways for students who want to study various subjects and an ‘open pathway’, which can be tailored to suit the needs of individual students.
